Who needs S/4HANA and who doesn't
SAP S/4HANA is built for companies with complex, often international processes: multiple locations, branched supply chains, strict compliance requirements in industries like manufacturing, pharma, or retail. Its strength lies in depth: finance, logistics, production, and HR run on a shared data model, which makes cross-department reporting easier. For a company with twenty or thirty employees and modest processes, SAP is almost always the wrong choice: license costs, implementation effort, and the need for trained staff are out of proportion to the benefit. Odoo or Microsoft Dynamics cover most of these requirements at a lower cost. A serious SAP agency says so openly instead of steering every project toward SAP.
What SAP partner status actually tells you
SAP awards partner tiers under its SAP PartnerEdge program, ranging from Open through Silver to Gold, based on revenue, certifications, and customer references. A high tier shows business volume, not automatically that the specific consultants on your project are certified. Ask for the names and certificates of the people who will actually work on your project, not the partner logo on the website. With SAP, case studies from similarly complex industry environments say more about fit than the partner tier alone.
The migration from ECC to S/4HANA
Standard maintenance for SAP ECC 6.0 ends in 2027. Paid extended maintenance runs through 2030, after which the system keeps running without vendor support. For many existing customers, migration is no longer an optional project but a question of timing. Three paths are available: technical conversion of the existing system (brownfield), a complete rebuild with cleaned-up processes (greenfield), or a selective middle path. Which path fits depends on how much historically grown customization sits in the current system. An agency with documented migration experience should be able to answer this question before the proposal, not once the project is underway.

SAP projects rarely start under €150,000 and can run considerably higher across multiple locations or countries. Smaller implementations with a strongly standardized approach, for example based on the S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, are possible from around €100,000.
